Comments about Little Cottage Unpainted Gambrel Barn Chicken Coop - Large:

The Coop was very easy to assemble, and was quite sturdy once up. No real carpentry skills required although installing the roofing can be a bit of a pain depending on the location of the coop, like ours. Our coop is actually sitting on a deck built on a bank.

The Coop comes with several pieces of aluminum trim for the 4 corners of the coop and two corners of the nesting boxes. I would suggest as we did, toss those and purchase standard pre-primed 1 x 3 trim at any lumber store. Paint them and trim the entire coop out, and not just the corners.

If I have a complaint it would be you cannot order the coop unassembled "and" painted. Would be nice to be able to chose a base & trim color and have it delivered unassembled and painted

Other than that, the chicks are finally in the coop and are happy

Comments about Little Cottage Unpainted Gambrel Barn Chicken Coop - Large:

[...]Know that the instructions online are pretty useless. Read them. Most of them say "put together as picture shows" which isn't very helpful. You just know the order of putting things together and that's it.If you don't have a heavy-duty battery-powered drill, don't bother. It's a BUNCH of screws! Also, if you are doing this properly - know you will have about $200 worth of shingles and drip edge to purchase (required) and about 10 tubes of caulk ($3 each) + 2 cans of oil-based primer ($17 each) + any paint you want. This does not come with steps. You'll need to build those, as well.Time - it took 1 full day to get it together, another full day for shingles and caulking, another full day for painting.I like it's size. Easy to stand straight in and clean up. Very good size nesting boxes. (NOTE: If you live in climates that snow, you will want to build your own roof extension over the nesting box area; otherwise, you will have snow on top of them.)The window, door/lock, vent, and chicken exit worked properly. (I did have to redo the latches, as they were not lined up, but that was easy.)When putting together the nesting boxes, it will talk about predrilled holes in the wood. There were no pre-drilled holes. If you don't predrill them yourself, the wood will split.Very durable. Will last a long time. I am SO GLAD I went larger. I will probably section off part of the left side to use as my chick hatchery in the spring. It also is large enough to really have a heat lamp in it for winter usage. It's large enough to also use as a good shed if you decide not to do chickens anymore.

            Customer Q & A

Q1: How involved is the assembly and how long would you estimate to complete?

A: The assembly time is estimated by the vendor as 4 - 6 hours for 2 people. Each coop comes with a step-by-step assembly manual but due to proprietary information, we are unable to post a full set of assembly instructions. The manual outlines a total of 60 steps for completed assembly. The coop will ship flat packed or unassembled on a pallet. Each of the walls is complete - meaning they are in sections with the siding already installed (siding already affixed for all pieces - such as outside nesting box entry as well) - but each wall would need to be affixed to the base. The door is already plumb and the window is already inset on the front and back panels respectively - you would need to secure to the base/frame and affix latches. The most pure assembly will be securing the roof trusses, installing the roof sheeting and then shingling the roof. The tools needed: Cordless drill (12V or higher), #2 Square Drive Bit, Hammer, 6' Step Ladder, Tape Measure, Square Utility Knife w/ blade & hook blade, Speed SquareHopefully this does help give you a rough idea of the assembly required for the Little Cottage Chicken Coop and your chickens’ potential new home!

Q2: For this coop, what brand of paint would you recommend using that isn't harmful to the chickens?

A: We would recommend using an outdoor rated paint that can withstand the outdoor elements. Sherwin Williams exterior paint would be a great choice to select for your coop and won't be harmful to your chickens.
